On this page we have gathered
together a collection of old photographs. These pictures are not dated and none give any details about the
subjects of the pictures. They
do, however, give us a fascinating insight into the fashions and culture
of their times. |

All
dressed up in their 'Sunday best' for this class photograph. People kept
their best set of clothes to wear to church on Sundays and for other
special occasions, such as the taking of this photograph. |

I'm so
clever, standing up like this! |
|
 |
A
future Wimbledon Champion perhaps, or is the racquet for badminton
rather than tennis? |

This
isn't traditional British dress of course, but a wonderful flower fairy 'fancy dress'
costume. The hat is amazing! I
think this picture must date from the 1920's or 30's when anything
connected with fairies was very popular.

Very
elegant. The collar appears to be 'chemical' lace, but the photo is a bit
too faded to really be certain. |

Quite
a large family. Most people in Britain have smaller families these days. |

Some
proud relative has probably knitted this matching coat and hat for this
sweet little girl. |

What a
smart pair of gentlemen. At one time no businessman would be seen going
into town without one of these bowler hats. Nowadays they are indeed a
rare sight. |

 |
Another
class of children, but why are there so few boys? Perhaps it is a
dancing class. |

These
two ladies look very fashionable in their smart blouses with 'leg of
mutton' sleeves. We use this term for sleeves that puff up at the
shoulders, because they resemble the shape of this joint of meat. I
think these two women must be mother and daughter. |

This
is a favourite picture of mine. Although the grandparents are dressed in
very formal Victorian attire they look amused by the whole process of
having their picture taken. Also the bearded old gentleman looks quite
stern but is gently holding the hand of the little girl. The boy is
wearing a smart school uniform with a straw boater hat. |
