Cushions and Nightdress Cases

I found these designs for cushions and nightdress cases in an old magazine. It was published in the very early years of the 20th century but is not dated. The name of the magazine is 'Needle and Home'.

The pages of the magazine are filled with descriptions and illustrations of items to make, using a variety of needlework techniques. When you bought the magazine you received a few free paper transfer patterns but for most of the articles  you bought the materials from them in what we now call 'kit form'. They would supply the silks and the linen already traced with the design, ready for you to start. It was also possible to purchase the trimmings such as lace and tassels that some items needed to finish them off.

Art Nouveau Cover

This panel could be used as a tray cloth or as the front of a cushion or nightdress case. It was worked on a linen background in four shades of pink. Three shades of green have been used for the leaves.  If you look carefully you can see that black cotton has been used to outline the stems and leaves on this design. To give the effect of shading only one half of the leaf has been coloured in. In the other half the leaves and veins have just been outlined in black.

Although the design of the flowers is quite naturalistic, the long sinuous stems and asymmetrical nature of the design is characteristic of the Art Nouveau movement. Finally a delicate bobbin lace has been used to outline the panel.

Lace Sachet

This intricate sachet combines a number of different techniques. A sachet is just a general term used to describe a small bag for all sorts of articles. Needlework sachets were often used for handkerchiefs, brush sets, underwear and so on.

The central panel here has an antique design described as heraldic dragons, made from bobbin lace. An attractive bobbin lace has been used for the edging of the sachet. The panels surrounding the centre are broderie anglaise, whilst the corner panels are decorated with embroidered net. To finish off the design a fine trim of ribbon has been added to frame the central panel.

Broderie anglaise
A combination of broderie anglaise embroidery and insertions of bobbin lace are here worked diagonally across the material to create an interesting and unusual design. The edges of the case are worked in an scalloped pattern. Ribbon is also threaded around the design.

It is also suggested that this panel could be used as a pram cover, in which case the ribbon would be of an appropriate colour. We use blue ribbon for a boy and pink ribbon for a girl. It's a good way of avoiding offending a parent by saying 'What a beautiful little girl' when the baby is really a boy!

Cutwork Primroses

I think this is my favourite. It is quite a simple design but very sweet. This type of cutwork is known as Richelieu work. It is worked in white on a white linen material. Buttonhole stitch is used to outline the flowers and make the little bars that stretch across the open spaces. The centres of the flowers are padded to give the design a slightly three-dimensional appearance. A delicate machine lace has been added as a finishing touch.

French Cushion
Isn't this beautiful! This cushion has been worked on a background of ivory taffeta. The magazine states that the design is derived from antique textiles from the time of Louis Seize. The central emblem of a dove and true lovers knots that surround it are typical of this period.

Five shades of blue silk are used for the ribbons and the roses and surrounding flowers are worked in various shades of pink and yellow. The central dove is pale grey and white. You would certainly be proud of yourself if you created a cushion as lovely as this.

A simple nightdress case
At the rear of the magazine is a section of simple items for children to make. This nightdress case is to be found in this section. The broderie anglaise design is not too complicated but you would have to work it neatly. The sloping flap of the case is certainly an attractive feature of this case. It is edged with a simple machine lace.
