This article aims to
show the
readers some decorative objects they could make as Birthday presents.
The brooches and blotter
cover at the top of the page are
decorated with sealing wax, a type of coloured wax that was originally used to seal
correspondence. A little
of the wax is melted over a
flame and the resulting liquid carefully dropped onto the brooch mount. As
each piece sets it is moulded into attractive three-dimensional shapes.
Wax of one colour is used for the background of the brooch and a variety
of contrasting colours for individual flowers and leaves.
The two compacts have designs
painted on them using special oil paint crayons. A white crayon is first used
to fill in the background and then coloured crayons to paint the design
onto this surface. At first glance this gives an effect similar to
needlework. A small drawing of the floral compact design is given for
the reader to copy.
Finally the wooden book-ends have
also been painted using this technique, to cleverly resemble bird nesting boxes.
A fine gift for a birdwatcher.
