French Dolls

All the illustrations in this section come from the  catalogue of the  Department Store 'the Louvre', dated 1915. The catalogue is a treasure trove of interesting items.

When you have studied these you can also have a look at the section on accessories for these dolls. Beautiful dolls with fashionable costumes in which to dress them. Could any little girl have asked for more?

These two dolls have lovely costumes of silk and lace. The doll on the left even comes with her own jewellery. Of course articles of this quality could only be purchased by the wealthier residents of Paris!

A newborn baby (according to the catalogue, it looks a bit older to me!) wearing hand-knitted jacket and bootees. We call soft shoes for babies 'bootees'.

The doll with the big bow in her hair is wearing the traditional regional costume of Alsace and Lorraine.

All of these doll can walk. According to the catalogue the doll in the middle of the picture is mechanical and can walk by herself without assistance. Fantastic.

The doll on the left was also available with a matching boy doll. All of the dolls in the pictures are dressed in fashionable clothes of the period. Many have articulated limbs so that they can 'walk' if their limbs are moved by hand.
