Stamens

It is still possible to find old examples of this 'stamen' jewellery on market stalls. I have occasionally seen pieces but this is the first time I have seen an explanation of how they were made. I believe it is still possible to find these bundles of artificial stamens, so why not have a go at making a brooch or some earrings.

Take a metal jewellery mount and cover it with a thin layer of metal glue. Add a piece of modelling clay, shaping it so that it is thicker in the middle of the mount and tapering down towards the edges. Cut most of the stem off a stamen and dab the end with glue. Push it into the clay, near the edge of the mount. Starting at this edge, repeat the procedure, adding rows of stamens in the colours you have chosen. The stamens should be placed closely together so that the clay does not show. The stamens in the centre should have slightly shorter stems than the ones at the edges.

マーケットを探すと現在でもこの古い「ステーマン」ジュエリーを見つけることができます。私も実際に見たことがありましたが、上記のような作り方の説明は初めて見ました。左側の人造のステイマンの束は今も手に入ると思います。ブローチかイヤリングでも作ってみてはどうでしょう。

金属の宝石台に金属のりを薄く塗ります。そこに工作粘土をはりつけて台の中央部を厚めに端に行くほど薄くなるように形を作ります。ステーマンの軸を短くカットしてその端にのりを軽くつけます。それを台にのせた粘土に深く押し込みます。この作業を繰り返し、配色しながらステーマンを差し込んでゆきます。ステーマンはすきまから粘土が見えないようにつめて並べます。中央部の軸の長さは周辺部より少し短くなっていなければなりません。

日本語ではこのようなクラフトをなんと読んでいるのかわかりませんでした。英語のままカタカナ読みにしましたが、日本語での呼び名を知っている方がいたらおしえてください。　（ヤスコ）
