This article aims to show the readers some decorative objects they could make as Birthday presents. The brooches and blotter cover at the top of the page are decorated with sealing wax, a type of coloured wax that was originally used to seal correspondence. A little of the wax is melted over a flame and the resulting liquid carefully dropped onto the brooch mount. As each piece sets it is moulded into attractive three-dimensional shapes. Wax of one colour is used for the background of the brooch and a variety of contrasting colours for individual flowers and leaves. The two compacts have designs painted on them using special oil paint crayons. A white crayon is first used to fill in the background and then coloured crayons to paint the design onto this surface. At first glance this gives an effect similar to needlework. A small drawing of the floral compact design is given for the reader to copy. Finally the wooden book-ends have also been painted using this technique, to cleverly resemble bird nesting boxes. A fine gift for a birdwatcher. |

手作りの誕生プレゼントのアイディアをいくつか紹介しています。 ページの左上の花器に花の模様があるものは吸い取り紙カバーでそこにはさんである白い吸い取り紙が見えています。その右側はブローチです。それぞれカラーワックスの一種のシーリングワックスを使って飾りのデザインがなされています。シーリングワックスは日本語では封蝋ともいい、手紙を封印するのに使われるものです。少量のワックスを溶かして、ブローチ台の上で溶けたワックスを成型して立体的なデザインを作っていく手法です。単色の下地の上に様々な色合いの花や葉を作っています。 二つのコンパクトは特殊なオイルペイントクレヨンを使って色づけが行われています。先ず最初に下地に白のクレヨンを塗り、その上にカラークレヨンで柄を描いています。ちょっと見るとニードルワークのようにも見えます。花柄のコンパクトのすぐ下にはデザイン画がついていてコピーできるようになっています。 .一番下の木製のブックエンドにも同じような方法で絵を描いて、うまく巣箱のようにみせています。バードウォッチャーへのプレゼントによさそう。 英文を読むためのヒント -brooch ブローチ -blotter 吸い取り紙 -correspondence 通信文書 -three-dimensional 3次元の、立体的な dimensionｓという単語は長さ、幅、奥行からなる寸法という意味になります。 -surface 表面 -at first glance: 一見したところでは |
