| In the central London
district of South Kensington there are several museums close together in
the same street. As well as the excellent Science and Natural History
Museums there is also the Victoria and Albert Museum, which is a huge
museum dedicated to the decorative arts. This museum contains 146
galleries covering all aspects of the decorative arts. silver, glass,
metals, ceramics, textiles, etc. It was first opened in 1852.
If you are interested
in antique textiles then I would highly recommend visiting this
museum. There is a fantastic collection of antique lace and also
galleries of other textiles, including wonderful ancient textiles from all over the world.
In some of the rooms there are cabinets containing drawers that pull out. Behind the
scenes there is an even bigger collection of textiles, housed in huge
floor to ceiling cabinets. These include the wedding
dresses of our royal family for many generations.
Wonderful early lace,
15th and 16th century. Fantastic.
Quilts.
Also galleries of
costume. Old and new. |
