This is not really a saying, but the phrase 'lost in the mists of antiquity' is one that is sometimes used, so I thought I would include it here. It means ' so old that it cannot be dated', as if we are looking so far back in time that our view of the past becomes obscured by clouds. I don't really know how old this bench is, but I think that this is a bit of an exaggeration! |
（このベンチの年代は大昔の霧のかなたです） これは実際には格言とは言えませんが、'lost in the mists of antiquity'というフレーズは時々使われるものなので､ここで取り上げてみました､ ｢年代がわからないほどとても古い｣という意味で､昔を振り返っても、古すぎて雲でかすんだようにはっきりしないということです。このベンチがどれほど古いものかは私もわかりませんが、この表現は少し大げさな気もします。 ヒント -mist 霧､かすみ -antiquity 古いこと､大昔 -obscure あいまいにする -exaggeration おおげさな表現 |
