behind the scenes

originally referred to seeing what is happening behind the scenery at a play. Now the phrase is used more generally to mean what goes on behind a facade that is presented to the public.

'The company looked very prosperous, but behind the scenes there were many problems.'

本来は芝居の舞台の裏で何が起こっているかを見ることを意味していました。今では、一般に知らされていることの裏で行われていることをあらわすのに使われる句となっています。

A stately home is a large and imposing house, normally set in extensive grounds, that once belonged to an aristocratic family. Sometimes the house is still owned by this family, or the National Trust may have taken it over to preserve it. Many of these houses are open for the public to visit.

大きくて堂々とした家。普通は広大な敷地にたっています。昔は貴族のものでした。今でも貴族が所有している場合がありますが、多くはナショナルトラストが引き継いで保存しています。一般に公開されている家もたくさんあります。
