Some time ago I bought an old photograph album that someone had once filled with a collection of these cartoons that poke fun at the idiosyncrasies of the British character. I discovered that the cartoons had been printed in 'Punch' magazine in the 1930's. They were by a cartoonist who called himself 'Pont'. This one is titled ' Keen Interest In Historic Homes'. It is true that we love to visit stately homes and, as with the lady on the right of the picture, we are often quite curious about what goes on 'behind the scenes' in such a house. Look out for more of these cartoons on our site in the future. |

少し前に購入したこの古いアルバムには英国人を風刺した漫画が収集されていました。これらの漫画は１９３０年代に'Punch'という雑誌に掲載されたものであることがわかりました。ペンネームPontという漫画家が書いたものです。
この漫画のタイトルは「歴史ある家への深い興味」となっています。事実、りっばなお屋敷があると我々英国人は訪ねてみたいと思うのです。右側の婦人のように、この家の舞台裏に何があるのかとても気になってしまいます。 英文を読むためのヒント -cartoons 漫画 -poke fun at ～をからかう。make fun of...と同じような意味。
