Bread Board

	This bread board sitting in an old pine bread-making tray has a traditional motto carved into it's surface. The board says 'Waste Not', which is part of the saying 'Waste Not, Want Not'. It is to remind the user of the board not to be wasteful when cutting slices of bread!
古い松材のトレーに入ったこのブレッドボードの表面に昔の格言が彫ってあります。 'Waste Not'とありますが、'Waste Not, Want Not'ということわざからとったもので､「無駄をしなければ不足もしない」という意味です。ブレッドボードの上でパンをスライスする時も無駄をしないよういましめています。英文を読むためのヒント -pine 松材　　　　　-carve 刻む､彫刻する -remind　思い出させる -wasteful 無駄な大きな木のトレーはパンの材料を混ぜ合わせる道具としてベーカリーで使われていました。こった文字や柄を掘り込んだブレッドボードほどアンティークとして珍重されます。
Although we now use 'want' to indicate we desire something, in expressions like- 'I want a cake'. in the past it was used to mean 'to be in need' of something. In other words if you waste lots of bread you will soon become poor. Bread is also sometimes used as a slang word for money and you will certainly be poor if you waste lots of that too!
現在では'want'という単語は'I want a cake'　のようになにか「欲しい」という意味で使いますが、昔はなにかが「必要である」という意味を持っていました。ですから、パンを無駄にするとすぐ貧乏になるよ、ということ。 'bread'という単語も口語では「お金」という意味でも使われます。確かにお金を無駄遣いすれば貧乏になりますね。英文を読むためのヒント -desire 欲する　　　　　　　　-expression 表現 wantを｢必要である」という意味で使うことはスコットランド以外では現在はほとんどありません。 'If you work hard and save your money, you will never want for anything.' 上の言い方は少し古めかしい表現ですが、｢節約すれば、たくさんたまる」ということです。
