This is
a plain cake that is
good eaten with a cup of tea or coffee. In the past it would have been
eaten with a glass of wine imported from the island of Madeira and
so has acquired this name. A plain sponge like this can also be used in the
sherry trifle.
紅茶やコーヒーといっしょにいただくとおいしいプレーンケーキで、カステラのようなものです。昔はマディラ島から輸入されたワインを飲みながらこのケーキを食べたようです。それでマディラケーキとも呼ばれるようになったのです。このようにプレーンなスポンジはシェリートライフルを作るときにも使うことができます。
