For
hundreds of years an exquisite form of needle lace has been made in the Mediterranean
regions of Turkey, Cyprus and the Greek Islands. Known as Bebilla or
Armenian lace this fine handmade lace is created by forming a series of knots
with a needle and thread. Additional techniques of crochet and a type of tatting
(using a shuttle) have also been used to enhance this jewellery. Originally
used to decorate the edges of traditional scarves and other costume, this
technique has been now adapted to create a beautiful range of original
jewellery. All
of the jewellery is handmade in Turkey in the traditional fashion. Each piece is
a unique work by an individual and so there is slight variation in design, size
and colour shade between pieces, reflecting the style of the needlewoman who
made it. Over
the years I have seen and admired many antique examples of the craft
(particularly wonderful antique scarf edgings) and so I was thrilled to find
that this tradition is continuing in the present day and to be able to offer
this jewellery to you.
